A Heart Rebellion A Regency Romance Ruth Axtell 9780800720902 Books

Ruth Axtell does a wonderful job with her novels, creating realistic characters, tension, and clear research into the time period. That being said, I feel like the plot summary does a real disservice to the book because it spoils every major plot point. It removed the element of surprise and made the book more difficult to enjoy in that respect. Not being much a green thumb, all of the botany dialogue became a little tedious at times, but it was still interesting for the most part. I really enjoyed the hero, as he was rather atypical for many of the regency romance leads you read in a novel. Lancelot (yes, that's seriously his name) is thoughtful, shy, introspective, and little awkward. He's that endearingly sweet guy you never really noticed until one day, the blinders come off, and it's OH, "How did I never SEE you before?" The heroine can be rather annoying at times, mostly because of her own selfishness and immaturity. I guess you could say she forgets who she is and she tries to become something she's not, but I found her a little less believable because it was hard to get a fix on who she really was at her core. At the end of the book, I didn't feel like I was reading about the same person. Her character arc or "transformation," was glossed over, so it made it hard to adjust for me. The hero's arc was much more satisfying as it felt like Lancelot came into his own and found he had some Alpha Male in him after all.

As a Christian romance, it was very clean. There was one fairly intense scene that was handled well. You got the severity of what was happening with out gratuitous detail. The gospel was front and center in the novel without feeling like the author was preaching at you. Some of the prayers sounded very modern and anachronistic, but I had been totally sucked into the novel at that point and was willing to let it slide.

I would recommend this book for sure, but caution to read as little of the plot summary as possible so that you can be surprised by the turn of events instead of reading it knowing what's already going to happen. Basic gist is: Boy meets girl at party. Girl does not like boy. Boy doesn't really like girl, but as events throw them into each other's paths, there is a grudging respect and admiration. Series of dramatic events unfold and test both characters as they grapple with how the outcome changes them. Ironically, the seemingly timid man discovers his mettle, while outspoken and reckless heroine is humbled. Of course, there's a happy ending, and I really enjoyed how the author closed the book.

A Heart Rebellion A Regency Romance Ruth Axtell 9780800720902 Books Reviews

Because Ms. Axtell has written some of my favorite novels, when I saw she had a new one out, I immediately downloaded it. Then I looked to see what it was about and I became nervous. I’m not a huge fan of reading novels where you know the main character is going to fall. I would much rather read about them after the fall, when they’re on their way to becoming a better person. So, to say I was nervous would be an understatement. Without further ado

What I liked

The style of writing. This novel is a regency. It’s got that beautiful slow pace, where just the minute of things can be complete game changers. There are class issues, Napoleon issues, ton parties. Ms. Axtell does a beautiful job of really capturing the era and is one of the few authors I read who can remind me of Georgette Heyer (there styles are very different, but both are definite regencies).

Lancelot. He’s pretty wonderful. He’s not your average outgoing male, but quiet, introspective, and yet has this wonderful spirit of adventure and serving the Lord. As you meet him, you cannot help but like him.

From reading what this novel is about, you become aware that Jessamine falls into disgrace. I was dreading it the whole time. And I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it wasn’t what I thought it would be exactly. And not as bad as I had anticipated. And that makes me happy.

Spiritually, there is a beautiful theme of grace. Jessamine has been good most of her life and she expected her “good works” to open doors for her. I like the way in which Ms. Axtell handles the issue.

What I didn’t like

The problem with Jessamine is that when you create a hero as wonderful as Lancelot, you begin to wonder if a woman as unsure of herself as Jessamine deserves him. And it’s easy to blame her. Sometimes she was hard to like even if I understood where she was coming from.

I think the “back of this novel” doesn’t quite give this book justice. If you asked me what it was about, I would not stress the things that it stressed because it had me anticipating things that were fairly minute.

Romantically, while I saw Jessamine and Lancelot fall in love, something was missing a bit, and I’m not sure what it was.

Romantic Scale8

Overall, a very good read and I’m excited about the next one in the series (dare I hope Lancelot’s sister?)

**I received this novel from Netgalley. My opinion was not affected in anyway.**
Good book. Would love to read again and I may do that
I like everything by this author! Her books are great at taking me out of the current day for a bit and sometimes I find a new way of thinking about things.
After Jessamine loves her best friend's bother, she has a hard time trusting her heart when it was broken. Lancelot wants to be a minister. He falls for Jessamine just after meeting her once. As they meet up at more social functions, Jessamine comes to see him as a friend.
I didn't care for Jessamine. I thought she was selfish, manipulative, and hypocritical. She claimed that London Society was boring and shallow and yet she was rude to anyone who tried to befriend her (before the makeover) and judgmental. She didn't even seem to treat her friends all that well. It bugged me. The first book in the series was so much better than this.
In this Christian historical romance, Jessamine Barry meets Lancelot Marfleet while she is staying with her godmother in London. While Lancelot is instantly drawn to Jessamine, she determines she will not fall in love, as she has already had her heart broken. As the book progresses, will Jessamine stand by her decision or will she risk trusting Lancelot with her heart?

This book is an easy read and is free of grammatical errors. Also for those who have read this book's prequel, which did not have a break when switching to another point of view, you will be happy to know that this book does not have that issue, so it does flow a little more smoothly than the first. For those who have not read the first book I don't think it is necessary. There are some references to things that happened in the first story but I don't think it will detract from following the story line in this book. I give this book five stars.
