This book was okay I guess. Honestly, and I know this is gonna sounds rude but I need to let this out, I forgot the whole thing shortly after reading it. I had to re-read the blurb to jog my memory. This is a thing that rarely happens to me so when it did I knew that I wasn’t going to have nice things to say about this story.

First off, the world building was sub-par for me. And that’s saying a lot because I’m one of those people that doesn’t really like world building. I like an author to give me just enough that I can fill in the blanks. But I don’t feel I even got that. It seemed all very rushed and intuitive. But like so intuitive an outsider (such as me) is thinking, “Okay, but how do you know that’s right?” Am I making sense?

Second, I didn’t really get why her not knowing what she was, was such a huge deal. It was never really explained to us. So when things don’t make sense or are never really explained, I tune out of the story. I almost DNF’d the book TBH but I was at like 75% in and I thought, might as well see if it turns around. Plus, I have had A LOT of DNF’s recently and I wanted to get out of my funk.

Third, it was unoriginal and a bit tropey. And while I am not a hater of tropes in general,(an author can make me LOVE a trope if written well) the lack of originality just made it a run of the mill read for me. I feel like a dick for this review but this is how I feel. Not a fit for me.

Oh Blood Warrior. I have had the Alexa Montgomery series on my for awhile waiting to read, but I held off. Why? Well I am just not much for paranormal romances usually. Sometimes they are great, but usually I just find the story to be eh. Blood Warrior was better than most, but wasn't my favorite read ever. It still made me want to read the next book though to see what happens so that is good.

This story was not what I expected. Alexa has grown up kind of normal. She runs to and from school everyday with her sister, no matter how far they live from school, trains in the evenings with her mom, and doesn't really fit in with other people. Other than that she has a normal-ish life. Until everything changes and she is forced to leave her home, keep her sister Nelly safe and find answers to all the questions she now has. She is thrown into this world she really knows nothing about. She has this fire within her that if she is not careful will take over and make her do things she doesn't really want to do. Between battling that, keeping Nelly safe, and trying to figure out what is going on in this new world and how she can help she has a lot on her mind.

When Alexa and her family are attacked one night by vampires she runs away with her sister Nelly and her best friend Jacks. Suddenly she finds out she is a warrior, her sister part vampire, her best friend a werewolf, and they are on the run. They find what looks like a safe haven in Two Rivers, but things don't appear to be what they seem. As Alexa tries to figure everything out she also gets closer to Kayden, a vampire guard in the town they are staying in.

For the most part I enjoyed this story. I loved the world that was created. The different types of vampires and beings were pretty interesting. I can't want to read more about it and how everything works. My one issue? The boys. Jacks obviously likes Alexa as more than a friend, as well as like every other guy who talks to her, but she and Kayden have a connection. They both obviously like each other as more than friends, but Alexa is so stupid about the whole thing. She is afraid of their connection so she doesn't make the smartest decisions. **spoiler alert** She chooses to be Jacks girlfriend when he asks just because she does love him. Only she keeps thinking about Kayden. Yeah. I hate that. She is so stupid about the whole Kayden situation! Argh it annoyed me. Really the problem is I didn't believe that she likes Jacks like that at all. I only saw that they were friends, but she liked Kayden as more. She is just like well I like Kayden, but he obviously doesn't like me like that so I guess I will be with Jacks because he does. So when she is with Jacks it just feels like she is stringing him along when she knows she doesn't like him like that which is a really terrible thing to do, especially to a friend. She loves Jacks, but it is obvious it is as a friend and nothing more. That and she doesn't completely trust Jacks so...I understand wanting to be strong and independent and not wanting to need Kayden, but whenever something with him would come up it is like she turned into a two year old. We shall see what happens with that. Off to read the next book!

Alexa Montgomery is not your regular 17-year-old. She has a quick temper, and in her school where she’s a junior, she has only two friends, her sister, Nelly, and Jackson, like her, an outlier. Her mother ‘trains’ her in fighting almost every day, in the roughest way imaginable, and insists that she and Nelly run to and from school every day. She understands none of this until their home is attacked by vampires, and she’s forced to flee with Nelly, leaving her mother to certain death.
During their escape, aided by Jack, Alexa learns that she’s the last of a race of supernatural warriors, people who possess the positive traits of nearly all other supernatural races, and she’d apparently the ‘chosen’ one whose destiny is to ‘save’ all the others. What this means, she has no idea, but she quickly discovers that she has abilities not possessed by others—she’s inhumanly fast, and capable of defeating fighters twice her size. Her problem, she’s not sure what she’s been ‘chosen,’ for, nor is she sure she wants this responsibility.
The more she learns, though, the more she is determined to ‘fix’ the world she knows, even if it means leaving those she loves behind.
Blood Warrior by H. D. Gordon is a pulse-tingling young adult fantasy. The graphic violence and blunt discussion of male-female relationships demand that parents exercise discretion about allowing young teens or pre-teens to read it; but it’s an entertaining story that will delight maturing and mature readers. I particularly liked the way the author integrated the supernatural world with the modern world in a way that is almost believable.
Generally speaking, I try not go read YA novels. At my age it's frustrating to read about mood swings, angst, and disproportionate responses to every day life. However, this one caught my attention. It wasn't bad but it came across as a mixture of several other YA series. If you've read The Girl in the Box, The Vampire Academy, and The Hunger Games you'll feel right at home. There are definitely some good plot twists and the way the society is set up is intriguing but the writing isn't focused enough to pull it together. There is a lot to process and it becomes predictable.
